Working in a collection agency

Mu' meneen Brothers and Sisters,

As Salaam Aleikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh. (May Allah's Peace, Mercy and Blessings be upon all of you)

One of our brothers/sisters has asked this question:

As-Salamu Alaykum,

I work as a bill collector for a collection agency who does not deal in riba.
However they work for banks which deal in riba.
Now is it even haram to work/help indirectly to riba banking system,
If it is haram. Then How can we save yourself from dis economy, as every entity which hire us seak help from riba banking system..

(There may be some grammatical and spelling errors in the above statement. The forum does not change anything from questions, comments and statements received from our readers for circulation in confidentiality.)

Answer:

In the name of Allah, We praise Him, seek His help and ask for His forgiveness. Whoever Allah guides none can misguide, and whoever He allows to fall astray, none can guide them aright. We bear witness that there is none worthy of worship but Allah Alone, and we bear witness that Muhammad (saws) is His slave-servant and the seal of His Messengers.

Brother in this evil environment one has to seek Allah swt mercy and forgiveness and strive his/her best to stay far far away from riba. If your company is not directly involved 100% in riba and your scope of work does not involve riba whatsoever, then you can safely assume that your remuneration is derived from the non-riba activities of the company and it will be halaal for you. You will be required to be diligent always and make sure that you do not cross the line and fall into the riba trap.

Whatever written of Truth and benefit is only due to Allah’s Assistance and Guidance, and whatever of error is of me. Allah Alone Knows Best and He is the Only Source of Strength. Allah Alone Knows Best and He is the Only Source of Strength.
