Is the Hadith which talks about the benefits of reading Surah Kahf on Fridays authentic?
Mu' meneen Brothers and Sisters,
As Salaam Aleikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh. (May Allah's Peace, Mercy and Blessings be upon all of you)
One of our brothers/sisters has asked this question:
1. Is the Hadith which talks about the benefits of reading Surah Kahf on Fridays authentic? If there is any similar Hadith, can you provide me that too?
2. Is the Hadith which says that if you read Surah Ikhlas once, you get the reward or reading 1/3 Quran, authentic? I read a very good book forwarded to me by my teacher (who`s from Al-Huda International) which said this Hadith was Maudu.
(There may be some grammatical and spelling errors in the above statement. The forum does not change anything from questions, comments and statements received from our readers for circulation in confidentiality.)
Recitation of kahf and ikhlas
In the name of Allah, We praise Him, seek His help and ask for His forgiveness. Whoever Allah guides none can misguide, and whoever He allows to fall astray, none can guide them aright. We bear witness that there is none worthy of worship but Allah Alone, and we bear witness that Muhammad (saws) is His slave-servant and the seal of His Messengers.
Q-1: Is the Hadith which talks about the benefits of reading Surah Kahf on Fridays authentic? If there is any similar Hadith, can you provide me that too?
Fiqh-us-Sunnah Fiqh 2.127
Topic: Recitation of Surah al-Kahf
It is preferred to recite Surah al-Kahf during the day and night of Friday.
Abu Sa'id al-Khudri reports that the Prophet (saws) said: "Whoever recites Surah al-Kahf on Jumu'ah will have illumination from the light from one Jumu'ah to the next." Related by an-Nasa'i, al-Baihaqi, and alHakim.
Ibn 'Umar reports that the Prophet (saws) said: "Whoever recites Surah al-Kahf on Jumu'ah will be blessed with a light that will rise from underneath his feet to the peak of the sky. This will be a light for him on the Day of Resurrection, and he will be forgiven for what is between the Jumu'ah [and the next] Jumu'ah."
Related by Ibn Mardwwiyah.
Al-Tirmidhi Hadith 2175 Narrated by Abu Sa'id
The Prophet (saws) said, "If anyone recites Surah al-Kahf on Friday, a light will shine brightly for him till the next Friday."

The vast majority of the scholars and jurists in Islam consider the hadith regarding the merits of reciting the Surah Al-Kahf on Fridays as authentic; but because the various reports find no mention in the two ‘sahihs’ of al-Bukhari or al-Muslim, which are considered the most authentic, some commentators have said that the records of Tirmidhi, an-Nisai, al-Hakim, and al-Baihiki cannot be relied upon as completely authentic, although they all agree that the chain of transmitters is absolutely faultless. And Allah Alone Knows Best.
Q-2: Is the Hadith which says that if you read Surah Ikhlas once, you get the reward or reading 1/3 Quran, authentic?
Sahih Muslim Hadith 1771 Narrated by Abu Hurayrah
The Messenger of Allah (saws) said: ‘Get together, for I am going to recite one-third of the Qur'an before you.’ And those who could get together gathered there. Then the Messenger of Allah (saws) came out and recited the 112th Surah Al-Ikhlaas of the Quran and then entered (his house). Some of us said to the others: ‘Perhaps there has been some news from the Heavens on account of which the Prophet (saws) has gone inside (the house).’ The Messenger of Allah (saws) again came out and said: ‘I told you that I was going to recite one-third of the Qur'an; keep in mind, this (Surah al-Ikhlas) is equivalent to one-third of the Qur'an!’
Sahih Al-Bukhari Hadith 6.534 Narrated by Abu Said Al Khudri
The Prophet (saws) said to his companions, "Is it difficult for any of you to recite one third of the Qur'an in one night?" This suggestion was difficult for them so they said, "Who among us has the power to do so, O Allah's Messenger (saws)?" Allah Messenger (saws) replied: "Surah Al-Ikhaas (112th Surah) is equal to one third of the Qur'an."
Al-Muwatta Hadith Hadith 15.17
Yahya related from Malik from Abd ar-Rahman ibn Abdullah ibn Sasaca from his father that Abu Said al-Khudri heard a man reciting Surat al-Ikhlaas (Sura 112), repeating it over and over again. In the morning he went to the Messenger of Allah (saws) and mentioned it to him. The Messenger of Allah (saws) said, "By The One in whose Hands is my life, it (Surah Al-Ikhlaas) is equal to one third of the Qur'an."
The absolute majority of the scholars and jurists in Islam are unanimous in their opinion that the above hadiths regarding the Surah al-Ikhlaas are absolutely authentic.
Whatever written of Truth and benefit is only due to Allah’s Assistance and Guidance, and whatever of error is of me alone. Allah Alone Knows Best and He is the Only Source of Strength.
