Marriage in Muharram.

Mu' meneen Brothers and Sisters,

As Salaam Aleikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh. (May Allah's Peace, Mercy and Blessings be upon all of you)

One of our brothers/sisters has asked this question:

Salam Walikum Brother Burhan,

I am planning to get married on 16th Dec and the reception is planned for the month of January. The date is still not fixed. We are confused because Muharram starts from 10th Jan which is for 40 days.

Can you please tell me if a wedding reception can be held during Muharram?

This is very urgent because I need to do the arrangements accordingly.

Warm regards

Answer:

Marriage in Muharram

In the name of Allah, We praise Him, seek His help and ask for His forgiveness. Whoever Allah guides none can misguide, and whoever He allows to fall astray, none can guide them aright. We bear witness that there is none worthy of worship but Allah Alone, and we bear witness that Muhammad (saws) is His slave-servant and the seal of His Messengers.

Respected Sister, every day, every month, every year belongs to Allah Subhanah Alone, and there is absolutely no restriction whatsoever on the believers regarding the time of the day, or any day of the week, or any month of the year whereby it is discouraged, restricted or forbidden for them to contract a marriage.

Except when one is in the actual state of ‘ehraam’ for pilgrimage to the Sacred House, one is at absolute liberty to contract marriage at any time of the day, or any day of the week, or any month of the year at their convenience.

There is absolutely no restriction in Islam if one chooses to contract marriage in the blessed month of Muharram, or during any other month of their year.

Whatever written of Truth and benefit is only due to Allah’s Assistance and Guidance, and whatever of error is of me alone.  Allah Alone Knows Best and He is the Only Source of Strength.

Your brother and well wisher in Islam,

Burhan
