Can one make supplication in sajdah

Mu' meneen Brothers and Sisters,

As Salaam Aleikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.  (May Allah's Peace, Mercy and Blessings be upon all of you)

One of our brothers/sisters has asked this question:

Dear Brother,

Someone once told me that you should not be performing a Duaa (supplicating Allah) while in Sujood. I wish to know if that is accurate in the light Of Quran and Sunnah. For myself, I find that I prefer to be in Sujood when I am praying to/supplicating Allah. I find that to be a 'natural' position.

Answer:

Can one make supplication in sajdah

In the name of Allah, We praise Him, seek His help and ask for His forgiveness. Whoever Allah guides none can misguide, and whoever He allows to fall astray, none can guide them aright. We bear witness that there is no one (no idol,  no person,  no grave, no prophet,  no imam,  no dai,  nobody!) worthy of worship but Allah Alone, and we bear witness that Muhammad(saws) is His slave-servant and the seal of His Messengers.

Abu Hurairah reported that the Prophet (saws) said, "The servant is nearest to his Lord when he is prostrating to Him, so make supplication in this state." (Related by Muslim.)

Sahih Muslim Hadith 970      Narrated by Abdullah ibn Abbas

The Messenger of Allah (saws) said: “I have been forbidden to recite the Qur'an in the state of ‘ruku’ (bowing) and ‘sajdah’ (prostration).  So far as Ruku' is concerned, extol in it the Great and Glorious Lord;  and while prostrating yourselves be earnest in supplication,  for it is fitting that your supplications should be answered.”

The Messenger of Allah (saws) guided the believers to make as much supplication as one wishes to the Merciful Lord in the state of ‘sajdah’ or prostration,  for the servant of Allah is closest to the Merciful Lord when he is in prostration to the Lord of the Worlds.

The Messenger of Allah (saws) forbade the believers to recite the Quran while in a state of Ruku or Sajdah;  and guided the believers to reserve the act of Ruku to extol and praise the All-Mighty and Exalted Lord.

But in the state of sajdah,  the believers were guided to praise and extol the Great and Glorious Lord,  and make any number of supplications and duas his heart desires.

Nu'man b. Bashir reported that the Prophet (saws), said, "Verily,  supplication is worship."

Abu Hurairah reported, "The Prophet (saws) said, "Nothing is more dear to Allah than one's supplication to Him.''

Whatever written of Truth and benefit is only due to Allah’s Assistance and Guidance, and whatever of error is of me.  Allah Alone Knows Best and He is the Only Source of Strength.

Your Brother in Islam,

Burhan
